The use of 'Architectural' in company name

Hi,

I wonder if anybody could help me please?

Myself and somebody I work with are considering setting up a company together doing house designs, extensions, estate design etc etc.

We are both Architectural Technicians, and wondered if you were legally able to use the term 'architectural' in a company name i.e. Joe Bloggs Architectural Design Consultants?

Hi Darren,

‘ARB registers individuals and not practices’ (www.arb.org.uk)

This is how I understand their guidance... You would need to call yourself 'Joe Bloggs Architect' if you were the only partner that was ARB qualified, or you could refer to as 'Joe Bloggs Architects’ if there were two or more registered architects.

The word 'architectural' is not protected, so you could become 'Joe Bloggs Architectural Design Consultants'.

If you are architectural technicians, it may be worth joining the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, www.ciat.org.uk, for some additional support.

Just be careful if placing adds with organisations - fall into the Architects category by mistake and the ARB will be all over you like a rash! We've found free listing sites taking our details and placing us under Architects - beyond our control but highly upsetting to those who value their title so greatly....
