Impossible to quantify. That's why an hourly charge is recommended! If everything goes swimmingly Stages A+B for a small extension could be an hour but if there are town-planning issues to resolve or difficult brief then time could easily be in excess of Stages C+D. Likewise for a large project the minimum would be only a few days. In terms of setting a lump sum fee (if demanded by client) I usually make a guess based on there being no 'issues' and place lots of caveats with all additional work being charged for at an hourly rate.

Hi. I agree with John that is impossible quantify, it is very dependant on the project, the the ability of the client to make decisions and the size of the design team. We have recently tended towards fixed rates for this period but we are very specific with the deliverables. If Stage B is inclusive of planning permission, the length of time will depend on the level of detail required for planning drawings and the design + access statement.

I would work out your deliverables and work backwards from there. I would always ask for a minimum of 4 weeks even for a small project to get some thinking time.
