Post Part 1 work experience or go straight into Part 2?

Im currently a 3rd year architecture student who will be graduating this summer, with the impending increase in tuition fees for students starting in 2012 would it be beneficial for me to undertake a part 2 course in 2011. By doing so i would have completed 5 years worth of study and missed gaining work experience in a practice post part 1 for a year or more?

The main advantages of going back to the part 2 course is that i will miss the increase of tuition fees in 2012 (although it is unclear how much the increase will be, the removal of the funding by the government for part 1 and 2 courses means that the fees could increase from roughly £4000 to £9000 per year with additional costs for rent and living expenses). It could also mean that the economy has recovered more over this period of time and there are more jobs available.

There are obvious advantages to not going back into a post grad course but will it benefit me more by doing 1 year in a practice post part 1 than it would 2 years post part 2.

The problem that i am struggling with is will an employer see this as a bad thing as i have gone through 5 years of study and have only gained at most 6 months worth of work experience.

I have started to look for placements for next year but i am still undecided whether a 3 month summer placement would be better than doing 12 months or more

any comments would be appreciated

I would say that from my own experience whether you work for one year after Part 1 or two years after Part 2 there is very little difference. In my own situation my year out gave me an idea what being an architect was all about, something I had no idea about before that. But otherwise it was a bit of a waste of a year, other than it gave me a year out to recover before I had to go back for another two years , and the last year of the Part 2 is a killer.

In your situation I would say go back to college definitely, you wont get a job at the moment anyway, if you think you can face another two years straight off that is.

I feel very sorry for you students at the moment, its criminal what students are being forced to put up with at the moment by the government. I was lucky I got a grant, otherwise I wouldnt have been able to afford training as an architect. Mind you I would probably have a job right now if I hadnt become an architect ...
