Poorly designed urban transport?

I am doing a piece of coursework related to transport in the urban environment, and am looking for a site to study in the UK where the provision of transport / stations / bus terminals etc is innefficent, and could be improved. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing your project is about designing transport infrastructure into an urban area and transport within a city/town rather than between towns?

As a case study on that basis you could look at Aberdeen, which has just had a new bus station and shopping centre linking through to the train station, but still has most of the city buses stopping on the main street.

Glasgow would be a good one, we had a fantastic tram and a coherent bus system once. Now the trams are all gone and a myriad of private busses clog the cities arteries with little rhyme nor reason.

Liverpool - Used to have a single main bus terminus at the Pier head, and a coach station adjacent to the mainline train station. Now we have two bus terminii remote from each other, and a coach station remote from trains and buses. The newest bus terminus is remote from everything apart from the Liverpool 1 retail development.

Ipswich in Suffolk.

It has two surface bus stations of which one is predominantly town buses and the second is intercity coaches and regional buses. It is on the Liverpool Street to Norwich mainline but has a cramped site for the railway station. Try having a look at the railway station and bus stations on such programs as Google earth or maybe Bing maps. The rail link also runs to Stratford and the Olympic site so you could maybe get some mileage out of that in your project.

Another good idea might be to try looking at local plans on council websites. You might find some good pointers on ideas you can use in your project. If you have to write essay-based work then I would suggest you explore any of the board sheet newspaper sites, the BBC news - and (of course) Building Design! This might bring up interesting stories and can form vital references.

Good luck and trust you ok with my scattergun answer!
