Part 2 in New York City!!!

Hi,

I have recently graduated as a Part II with a couple of years experience in various offices and I would like to go and work in New York, maybe completing a year (or more) Part 2 experience over there.

I know of a few people who have done their Part 1 year out in New York, so im assuming Part II wont be impossible but i cant seem to find anything of good advice on the net from a wider public knowledge base about Part II over there, hence asking BD readers for any help/information/advice.

Anything would help and I would be very grateful,

Thanks

Don't know any specifics but the AIA have a UK chapter web site is www.aiauk.org

There is also information about year out placements on the RIBA PEDR website www.pedr.co.uk

Whatever you do get started on your PEDR sheets as soon as you get a job... otherwise you'll be chasing your tail to catch up!

Good luck anyway

After completing my Part 1 year out abroad, it is my understanding that Part 2 experience PEDR has to be undertaken in the UK or Ireland to count. There's nothing stopping you working over there (as long as you have a green card), but it won't count towards your PEDR.

Also, I think it might be a bit more difficult to get a work visa if you're a British citizen if you're going out there for Part 2 experience. When people go to the US for Part 1 experience they usually get a form of intern/work placement visa, but you can usually only get these if you can prove that you will be a 'student' ie enrolled on a course of study throughout the period and will be returning to education to complete your studies after the period of experience.

You can easily argue/get the paperwork to prove this for Part 1 experience, but quite difficult to organise in your situation as you have essentially 'finished' university for good. Let us know how you get on, I'd be interested to see if you get round it...
