Internship Advice

I'm a Part 1 graduate, still on the job hunt and with little success so far. I have been contacting firms directly, and applying for the few Part 1 vacancies that crop up now and then, but I am thinking of trying some new strategies.

I was wondering whether anybody knew of any trustworthy International Internship programs or websites for architecture students, that could even perhaps provide accomodation, or some level of travel expenses, whilst still remaining essentially unpaid?

I've had friends who've done such internships in the US in other other fields of work who've really enjoyed it, though is this kind of scheme suitable/possible for Architecture students?

But I'll also add a question. Why do you require a programme? In my experience you have a better chance if you apply directly. The only benefit I can see is that you might not have to pay for your flights/visa, but you will be paid less...

Also, I would certainly not work for free, if you've got the confidence and are ambitious enough, then apply for a proper job. You'll earn more and be able to organise your own accommodation etc. with the help of the office. You will be surprised at the responsibility many offices will give you even with only a BA/BSc. You must remember that for many of your university cohort from abroad, that is the only degree education required to become an architect by their equivalent of the ARB/RIBA.
