Indemnity Insurance and retention of Title

I am trying to assess the level of PI I need,if at all.

I am a registered architect, and proud to retain the title, though I have long since moved out of working as an Architect. To date I have not needed to get PII as I was either covered by an employer or I was not working in the field of achitecture.

I am currently investigating setting up a small home/office management service that would offer a range of practical services (eg repairs or relocation management)including design guidance to save space/use it more effectively.

My question is what level of insurances should I get to be reasonably protected, and is what level of insurance is required to meet the ARB codes. I am clear I do not intend to use the title of architect or architecture to describe the service.

Hi Bob,

In order to retain your registration as an 'Architect' you are obliged to hold PI insurance for the work you do, which includes design guidance. You can do one of two things:

  1. Ring up a PI insurer, someone like the RIBA Insurance Agency (www.architectspi.com) can give you advice on the minimum level of cover you will need.
  2. If you don't want to practice as an architect then you can remove yourself from the ARB register, thus you do not need to comply with their Code of Conduct and thus you don't need to have insurance.

Having insurance will provide protection for yourself and your business against any potential problems that may arise. You would be putting yourself at risk by not holding PI insurance of any kind.
