How do I register my architectural practice in the UK even though its not RIBA certified? Can one do that, ie set up an architect's office without having to register the practice with RIBA but still own the name of the practice and run an office with an accountant?

Ajay the RIBA have protected the title of Architect with tremendous fervour and it is not possible to set up a registered architectural practice in the UK using the title 'Architect,' unless as John has mentioned you are ARB accredited, however I have seen practices of 'designers,' and unregistered practitioners set up design firms calling themselves consultancies specialising in, 'Architectural Services.' An alternative to this is to have a business partner that is an RIBA registered architect and set up together that way. Del

I am not sure that it is possible to 'register' any architectural practice in the UK. One can register a limited company at Companies House. ARB registration and RIBA membership is as an individual. RIBA Chartered Practice status is another route available if you are an architect. If you are a registered architectural technologist I believe that CIAT have a system in place too.

You can't of course set up an architect's practice if you are not an architect registered with ARB to use the title in the UK. It is a criminal offence and there are no Ajay Khanna's listed on ARB's website register.

You can set up an architectural practice in the UK without any formalities at all. You may not use the title "architect" unless the control of the practice is in the hands of a person registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). It is only the word "architect" that is controlled. The activity of architectural practice is not controlled and terms such as "architectural consultant" are permitted.
