Experiences of inclusiveness or bullying in architecture

I have to pose a question in light of my own experiences of working in architecture. I have been in the industry for over ten years and have witnessed (and been on the receiving end of) a culture of discrimination. I have witnessed not only wide spread use of language and attitudes based around racial and ethnic discrimination but also a deeper and more general culture of bullying often based around some perceived difference. These have ranged from a poor understanding of illnesses or disability to outright sustained attacks on colleagues from differing ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Sexist attitudes still seem to be deemed amusing if not openly condoned and an undercurrent of homophobic humour seems to pervade.

I wonder if I have just seen the worst of the industry or have others seen or have suffered similar issues? If the later is true then even in these difficult time can we address these issues and put our house in order?

I hope that what I have witnessed is not the rule for the industry but feel I have to try to find out what others have experienced because if there is a wider problem it must be faced.

I have seen such things on occassion but the main problem I have faced is bullying by partners and directors to get staff to work over capacity or more productively. That is an issue in many firms I have been in and doesnt seem to vary with how much or little you are being paid. Ive seen some terrible bullying, in one of my recent firms, of a female colleague who ended up bursting into tears and leaving the practice a few weeks after starting. I never take that kind of attitude well which is why I have had many jobs and never been in any longer than two years, its that prevalent in the industry.

Hi.

I would like to think that there isn't an industry wide issue of bullying.

I have been in isolated incidents where sexist or racist behaviour was exhibited or comments were made, which were immediately berated and did not reoccur. In the past I have been in firms where sexist behaviour was persistent, as it was considered 'banter' and healthy staff bonding. I ended up leaving and they were left wondering why they struggled to retain female staff. My current office does not tolerate this kind of behaviour at all, we also aim for 50/50 male-female representation and we are never too far away from this ratio.

There is a very apparent lack of representation of black and female architects over the wider profession. A couple of years ago there was more action to highlight this as an issue and generate more support for minority groups and women in architecture. Perhaps this needs to be reinvigorated as an issue (when we are not so busy dealing with the repurcussions of the recession).

Hopefully you are experiencing an isolated issue, but make sure you stand up and say that this is not appropriate behaviour, otherwise it will never change.

AA.
