I am concerned about the growth of unpaid work and internships. Practices should pay staff for their work in a proper fashion. Students should get at least the minimum wage and depending on talent and experience be paid more while gaining experience, not seen as a source of cheap or free labour.

If you can offer to work for nothing and live at home do it. Thats what I did last recession and it got me a job. You have to sometimes take drastic action in such times as these. If you are good you will most likely get paid something after a few months anyway, I did.

Since May 2009, unemployed architecture graduates looking for practical experience after completing part I will be able to undertake an unpaid placement of up to 13 weeks without forfeiting their £64.30 jobseeker’s allowance, under new rules

Graduates must have been claiming the benefit for at least six months to be eligible.

The announcement — which applies to all unemployed graduates who want to do an unpaid placement — was made by innovation, universities and skills secretary John Denham.

Actually you can do 16 hours a week of unpaid work whilst still claiming jobseekers allowance (without having to sit around twiddling your thumbs for 6 months first) That is if you can find someone willing to even give you unpaid work.

Housing benefit and council tax benefit are not affected by unpaid work experience at all, you can even claim these whilst earning a few pennies, as long as you don't go over the £64.30 per week limit.

I hope this helps.
