Bsc Architectural Technology and accredited universities

I am currently in the process of applying to study Architectural Technology at various universities in the UK. While two of the universities I have applied to are fully accredited one is accredited in principle (University of Northampton).

I have read all the information on the CIAT website as to the definitions of the types of accreditation. My main concern is that if I complete a degree at a school that is currently accredited in principle will I not have the POP record exemptions than if I studied at an accredited school. Not to mention increased difficulty in gaining employment.

At what point would be degree be counted as being from an accredited university, if at all? Would it be if the university was accredited during my time on the course or if it was awarded after graduation would my degree be counted as accredited retrospectively?

As I am sure you can appreciate choosing the right university is a big step. As I am a mature student I would not wish to harm or delay my career progression by completing a degree from a non accredited university.

I was also interested to know if there are any league tables of universities for Architectural Technology courses as I have been unable to find any.

I am a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technology and Interior Design at Southampton Solent University, which is CIAT accredited. I suggest you check the CIAT website re POP records and rules (www.ciat.org.uk); if you can't find the answer there send them an email; they're generally pretty quick about turning queries around. Also, Northampton should be able to clarify their situation in this respect; if they can't or won't, I wouldn't want to go there anyway!

I would recommend going to an accredited course so that you can be confident that you will have studied the full range of subject areas for Architectural Technology. As regards a league table, I don't think one exists in our subject area, however there is a relatively small group of possible courses and each one will have external examiners from another university. This is how we ensure that our standards are maintained and appropriate for the discipline.

Try and visit the universities that you are considering and talk to the staff running the course; check out library and studio facilities etc.

If you might be in a situation where you could, as a mature student, want to change to a part time mode of study, make sure this would be possible in the uni you choose. We run a full time degree course (3 years); our part time students can do the degree over 5 years and at the end of their second year they are awarded an HNC. The HNC links seamlessly with the degree course at the start of the full timers year 2.

I hope this helps and best of luck with choosing courses!
