Added Value? What is Good Design?

What is "good design" when we consider the need to demonstrate that architects and architectural technologists bring added value to clients?

Can those practicing in the field of architecture define what is good design in its broadest meaning?

Do we just look at the idea of what makes great architecture or can we define fine something more fundamental?

Is the process of design itself something that can be sold as bringing added value when carried well?

There will be no quick answer to this one as the topic can cover concepts of what lifts a building to become an important architectural work to the social benefit that ideas such as secured by design promote as examples.

I would hope that this post gets some interesting responses!

"Good Design" You have just hit the nail on the head.

There are so many factors derived from that phrase, I'm a architectural technician training to be a architect. I would have to say that alot is dependent on the project to hand.

A phrase I've heard in passing is "Design is what is left when time and money have run out" I think this is a very negative answer for anyone in design. This phrase is true but design in my opinion starts with the person within the project, if they take pride in their work half the battle is won.

We can look at certain aspects of design like 1) Is it Visually Pleasing? 2) Is it Practical?, but alot of this is down to opinion unless it has a function.

If values of design and experience can be brought to the client, there is a added benefit to achieve a better product.

There are so many more items to discuss with Design, hopefully we can get these out in the open.

Regards

Chris

Chris cheers for the response. I feel that this issue of “good design” needs to be explored by the architectural sector. It is the one thing that we all love to promote as being our major benefit we bring to the construction process but I still haven’t heard anybody come up with a solid expression of what this Good Design is and how we bring added value because of it. I passionately believe we need to debate the core values we use to sell architectural services so we can deliver more for our clients (thus gaining reputation and further jobs)
